Most states charge sales tax on the price after the trade-in is deducted; this calculator does the same. Check your state rules.

How the car payment is calculated

Amount financed = Vehicle price + Sales tax − Down payment − Trade-in. The monthly payment then uses the standard loan formula with the APR divided by 12 and the number of months in the term.

Example

A $32,000 car with 7% sales tax, $4,000 down and no trade-in financed over 60 months at 7.5% APR gives a monthly payment of about $604 and total interest of roughly $6,000.

What is a good APR for a car loan in 2026?

Rates depend heavily on credit score. Borrowers with excellent credit (760+) often see 5–7% on new cars, average credit 8–12%, and subprime borrowers 15% or more. Used-car rates are typically 1–3 points higher than new.

Should I choose a longer loan term?

Longer terms (72–84 months) lower the monthly payment but cost far more interest and increase the risk of owing more than the car is worth. Many experts suggest keeping a car loan to 60 months or less and the total payment under 10–15% of take-home pay.
