Height and weight – US or metric units
BMI is a screening tool for adults 20+, not a diagnosis. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density or body composition. Talk to a doctor about your health.
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index is a simple number calculated from your weight and height that is used by the CDC and WHO to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems. It is the same for men and women.
BMI formula
Metric: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². US units: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)². For example, someone 5'9" (69 inches) weighing 170 lb has a BMI of 703 × 170 ÷ 4,761 ≈ 25.1.
BMI categories for adults
Below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is a healthy weight, 25.0–29.9 is overweight, and 30.0 or above is obese (with classes I, II and III at 30, 35 and 40).
Limitations of BMI
BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle, so athletes can score as "overweight" while being very lean, and older adults may have a normal BMI with too little muscle. Waist circumference, body-fat percentage and blood tests give a fuller picture.
