Weighted GPA adds +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB classes (a common scale – your school may differ).
How GPA is calculated
Each letter grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0, with +/− steps of 0.3). Multiply each class's points by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by the total credits. GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits.
Weighted vs unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA tops out at 4.0. A weighted GPA gives extra points for harder classes – typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB – so it can exceed 4.0 (a 5.0 scale). Colleges usually look at both, and many recalculate GPA using their own method.
What is a good GPA?
A 3.0 is a B average and is often the minimum for scholarships and many programs; 3.5+ is considered strong; 3.8–4.0 is competitive for highly selective universities. Most colleges require at least a 2.0 to stay in good academic standing.
How to raise your GPA
Because GPA is a weighted average, the fewer credits you have completed the faster it moves. Prioritise classes with the most credits, retake failed courses if your school replaces the grade, and remember one bad semester has less impact as you accumulate credits.
