How much should you tip in the USA?
The standard tip at a sit-down restaurant in the United States is 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill. 18% is a common middle ground, 20% or more for excellent service. For bartenders, $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab is typical; for food delivery 10–15% (minimum $3–5); for hairdressers and taxi/rideshare drivers 15–20%.
Tip formula
Tip = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100). Total = Bill + Tip. Per person = Total ÷ number of people. For a $60 bill at 18%, the tip is $10.80 and the total is $70.80 – $35.40 each for two people.
Should I tip on the tax?
Etiquette says tip on the pre-tax amount, but many people simply tip on the total for simplicity – the difference is small. This calculator uses whatever amount you enter.
Quick tip chart
On a $50 bill: 15% = $7.50, 18% = $9.00, 20% = $10.00, 25% = $12.50. On a $100 bill: 15% = $15, 18% = $18, 20% = $20, 25% = $25.
