What affects the price

Beyond height, arborists look at trunk diameter, species (oaks and hardwoods are denser and slower to cut than pines), condition (dead or rotten trees are riskier), and above all location. A tree leaning over a house, fence or power line must be rigged and lowered in sections, which can add 25–50%. Difficult access for a bucket truck or crane and long travel distances add more. Permits are required in many cities for trees above a certain diameter.

Ways to save

Get three quotes from insured, ISA-certified arborists, bundle several trees into one visit, schedule in winter when crews are less busy, and ask for a price without debris hauling if you can chip or keep the wood. Never hire an uninsured "guy with a chainsaw" – an injury or property damage on your land can become your liability.

Frequently asked questions

Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal? Usually only when the tree falls on a covered structure, typically up to $500–$1,000 per tree. Who pays if a neighbor's tree falls on my property? Generally your own insurance, unless the neighbor was negligent about a known hazard. Can I remove a tree myself? Small trees under 15–20 feet away from structures are DIY-possible; anything larger is a job for professionals.
