How Much Do Solar Panels Cost in 2026?

A home solar panel system costs about $3.00–$3.40 per watt installed in 2026, so a typical 7–8 kW system runs roughly $21,000–$27,000 before any incentives. The 30% federal tax credit for homeowner-owned systems ended on December 31, 2025, which makes state rebates, net metering and smart sizing more important than ever. Estimate your system below.

Sizing assumes 80% system efficiency and that solar offsets up to 100% of your use. Prices are 2026 installed cash prices before incentives. The 30% federal credit (25D) does not apply to owner-purchased systems placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Solar panel cost in 2026

Solar.com's 2026 national benchmark is $3.36 per watt installed before incentives, and Fixr reports an average of $3.04 per watt, with a typical 7.6 kW rooftop system costing about $23,100. Most homes need 6–8 kW, which works out to roughly $18,000–$27,000 before incentives. Prices per watt fall as systems get bigger, because permitting, design and labor are spread over more panels.

The federal tax credit ended for owned systems

The biggest change in 2026 is that the 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) ended for homeowner-owned systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. On a $24,000 system that credit used to be worth $7,200, so the real out-of-pocket cost for a cash or loan purchase has risen even though equipment prices are flat or slightly lower. Leases and power purchase agreements (PPAs), where a company owns the panels, can still use a commercial credit (Section 48E) for projects that start construction by July 4, 2026 or are placed in service by the end of 2027, and some installers pass part of that saving on as a lower monthly rate.

Where the money goes

Panels themselves are only about 12% of the price. The rest is inverters, racking, wiring, labor (around $1,600 on a typical job), and especially "soft costs" – sales, design, permits, inspection and installer overhead – which Fixr puts at roughly $13,400 on an average system. A single 400-watt panel sells for about $150 wholesale and $280–$430 retail.

Batteries and add-ons

A home battery adds about $10,000–$20,000 (Fixr's average is about $15,000) and is most valuable where utilities pay little for exported power or where outages are common. Other add-ons: an EV charger $600–$2,000, a main-panel upgrade if your electrical service is too small, and about $3,800 to remove and reinstall panels if the roof needs replacing later – so replace an old roof before installing solar.

Cost by state

Installed prices range from about $2.61 per watt in Florida to $3.52–$3.53 in Alaska and Washington, DC, according to Fixr. California averages about $2.95 per watt on Solar.com's marketplace. High-price states are not always bad deals: payback depends just as much on your electricity rate and sunshine.

Payback and savings

Without the federal credit, a cash-purchased system pays for itself in about 7–10 years in states with high electricity rates and 10–14 years in average-rate states, according to Solar.com; Fixr cites an average of about 10 years. Over a 25-year panel life, solar electricity costs about 9–13 cents per kWh versus a national utility average near 18 cents. Net metering rules matter: if your utility credits exported power at the full retail rate, payback is much faster than in states that pay a lower "avoided cost".

Ways to save

Get at least three quotes and compare price per watt, not just monthly payments. Size the system to your real usage from 12 months of bills. Check state rebates, SRECs and property-tax exemptions (search DSIRE for your ZIP code). Pay cash or use a low-rate loan if you can, since dealer financing fees can add 10–30% to the price. Choose a simple south-facing roof section, and avoid add-ons you do not need.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 10 kW solar system cost in 2026? About $30,000–$34,000 installed before incentives. Is there still a solar tax credit in 2026? Not for systems homeowners buy and own – the 25D credit ended December 31, 2025 – but leased systems and some state programs still get incentives. How many panels do I need? Divide your annual kWh use by about 1,300–1,600 (the yearly output of one kW in average sun) to get kW, then divide by 0.4 for the number of 400-watt panels. How long do solar panels last? 25–30 years, with most warranties guaranteeing at least 80–90% of original output at year 25.
